Social-Ecological Systems (SES) are complex and adaptive systems with linked bio-geo-physical and social components through feedback mechanisms. Understanding and modeling the complexity in SESs is critical for achieving sustainability of SESs but it's challenging. Social-ecological simulations and games recently emerged as a new tool for studying and communicating SESs (e.g., in the field of common resources management). I will first introduce a few games with different levels of complexity and various topics, such as disaster preparedness, forest conservation, and water management. We will then play a webpage-based role-playing simulation game, namely Forest@Risk, with medium level of complexity. Players will have chances to practice strategy, collaboration and leadership in a complex environment and learn how to align goals, negotiate and coordinate actions to achieve goals. After the game we will further discuss how such games can help explore complexity in SESs and facilitate research, education and communication.
