Currently, ESPRE mainly follows the orientation and target designated by the State to undertake researches around four broad research themes(earth surface processes, resource ecology, earth surface system modeling and simulation, and sustainable regional development model) by making use of the ESPRE Bases and Platforms. Additionally, ESPRE also undertakes liberal explorative researches according to the national demands and new growth point of disciplines.

Currently, the lab is carrying out over 30 National High-tech R&D Programs as well as national key technologies R&D Programs. About 857 research papers (258 in SCI(E)) and 32 volumes of scholar books were published.
