ESPRE was invited to attend the 36th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Application Workshop in Broomfield organized by US Natural Hazards Center in Boulder, Colorado from July 10 to 12, 2011. Around 400 experts from US, Canada, New Zealand, Italy, Germany, Britain, Austria and China were present.
As the co-chairing organization of International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change-Integrated Risk Governance Project (IHDP-IRG) (2009-2019), ESPRE was invited to the conference and set up special sessions. Professor Michael H. Glantz from Colorado University chaired the session. Associate Professor Wang Ming, leader of ESPRE Integrated Risk Management Research group assisted in organizing. Professor Shi Peijun, Ye Qian systematically introduced goals, detailed research projects and progress made in the recent 2 years, which arose many attendees’ interest, some expressed willingness to synergize forces of their countries to be part of the international scientific plan so as to make contribution for disaster reduction.
During the conference, invited by person in charge of the 8th zone of Emergent Affairs Management Bureau of US National Land Security Department, Professor Shi Peijun delivered a report titled “Wenchuan Earthquake Disaster Assessment and Reconstruction” to comprehensively introduce China’s experiences in dealing with the earthquake and lessons learned, the report gained praise from representatives. “Atlas of Natural Disaster Risk of China” (Chinese and English versions) (the 3rd edition) made its debut and was well received by attendees. Dr. David Applegat, Deputy Director of Natural Disaster Department of USGS held that the book was the first of its kind in the world, which systematically illustrated China’s disaster distribution outlook and provided detailed scientific basis for China and the world in dealing with natural disasters.
