From April 27 to May 18, 2011, ADREM successfully launched Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day activities including special academic report, large academic seminar as well as panel publicity and education activity.
On April 27, Dr. Luo Pingfei, Deputy CPC Secretary and Deputy Minister of Ministry of Civil Affairs participated in the opening ceremony and delivered a special report of “China’s Disaster Reduction Work—History, Status Quo and Trend”.
On May 9, Executive Director of IHDP, Former Director of Economic Department of UNEP, Dr. Anantha Duraiappah delivered a special report with the theme of “Green Economy: New Emperor’s Cloth” in Yingdong Hall. Vice President of Beijing Normal University Hao Fanhua awarded Guest Professor Certificate to Dr. Anantha Duraiappah.
On the afternoon of May 10, Inauguration Ceremony of IHDP-IRG (Integrated Risk Governance) project which was officially approved to be IHDP core scientific project in September 2010 and jointly initiated and chaired by Professor Shi Peijun and Professor Carlo Jaeger of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research was held in Beijing International Conference Center. This is the first international scientific project proposed by Chinese scientists in ESSP, which shows the recognition of China’s disaster risk research by international community.
Accompany the Inauguration Ceremony, from May 10 to 11, IRG project team held a meeting in BNU. Representatives from Beijing headquarter, and regional offices in EU (Potsdam), North America (Boulder), East Asia (Singapore), and Africa (Ethiopia) were present to discuss organization structure and implementation plan of IRG project. In the meeting, IRG risk model team was set up and persons in charge were appointed.
On the noon of May 12, panels publicity and education activity of disaster reduction with the theme of “actions to prevent and reduce disasters with joint effort to build a safe school” was held, aiming to commemorate 3 years anniversary of 5.12 Wenchun earthquake and appeal for concrete actions to reduce disasters. The activity was well received by faculties.
On the afternoon of May 18, series of 5.12 Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day activities were concluded in Yingdong Hall. With widely influential and high level academic reports as well as in-depth educational publicity activities, it greatly improved people’s awareness of disaster prevention and reduction.
