As member of Volvo Environment Prize Jury, Professor Shi Peijun participated in the final review from May 15 to 17 in Stockholm. The result was released by Volvo Environment Prize Foundation in September.
The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded for “Outstanding innovations or scientific discoveries which in broad terms fall within the environmental field”, which is regarded as Nobel Prize of the field. The Prize is awarded by a Volvo Environment Prize Foundation, which was instituted in 1988. It invites universities, research institutes, scientists and engineers as well as other individual and organizations to submit nominations. Scientific Committee reviews the nominations and presents a report to the international Prize Jury. The Jury recommends one or several winners to the Board of the Volvo Environment Prize Foundation, which then makes the formal decision. The awarding ceremony takes place in Stockholm in November of the year. The Prize consists of a diploma, a glass sculpture and a cash award for approximately 200 thousand dollars.
Since the first award in 1990, the prize has gone to 37 people. Among them are many well-known names and three Nobel Prize winners. Members nominated into Jury and Science Commission can enjoy great academic reputation. Professor Shi Peijun was nominated as member of the Jury for his great achievements in international disaster reduction field as the only representative in Asia and Pacific region, which also brought academic reputation to China.
