The 13th Plenary Meeting of Chinese Academicians of IEAS Held Successfully

On November 1, 2009, the 13th plenary meeting of Chinese Academicians of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences (IEAS) is held in Beijing Jade Palace Hotel. 16 experts and scholars from Beijing Normal University (BNU) are awarded as “IEAS Academician” and “IEAS Junior Academician”, including Professor Xu Guanhua, director of the Academic Committee of the College of Global Change and Earth System Science and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Professor Shi Peijun, executive vice president of BNU and director of the State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology (ESPRE).
 
At 9:00 am, Academician Liu Zunyi, vice chairman of the chairman board of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS announces the opening of the meeting, and Academician Wang Guangtao, vice chairman of the chairman board of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS then reads the congratulatory letters from state leaders, including State Councilor Liu Yandong. Academician Li Tieying, honorary chairman of the chairman board of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS and vice chairman of the standing committee of the National People’s Congress, and Academician Tikunov Vladimir Sergeevich, president of IEAS respectively address at the meeting.
 
As recommended by the Chinese Science Center of IEAS and reviewed and approved by the chairman board of IEAS, 6 scholars namely Lang Jinghe, Li Chongyin, Liang Dingbang, Xu Guanhua, Zhang Xingang and Zhou Zhenhong are directly awarded with academicianship, six former junior academicians including Feng Zhijun, Mao Qizhi, Wang Yumin, Wang Zuwen, Zhuo Baoxi and Shi Peijun are elected as academicians; and four scholars are elected as junior academicians, namely Qing Wu, Li Xia, Liu Wenhui and Shao Yaping. Academician Li Tieying, Academician Tikunov Vladimir Sergeevich and Academician Jiang Zhenghua then issue certificates to the 16 academicians and junior academicians. Academician Jiang Zhenghua, chairman of the chairman board of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS makes work report at the meeting. Besides, all participants of the meeting review and pass the amendment of the Articles of Association of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS, and elect new leadership of the center. Academic Jiang Zhenghua, dean of management school of BNU is selected again as the chairman of the chairman board of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS, and Academician Shi Peijun is elected as member of the chairman board.
 
 
Established in 1994, the IEAS is an international scientific organization consisting of world-renown natural scientists, experts of engineering techniques, management scientists and social scientists. Now IEAS has more than 600 academicians, junior academicians, honorary member and managing staff from 46 countries around the world, and has established science centers in 15 countries. The Chinese Science Center of IEAS was approved to be established by the formerly State Science and Technology Commission in 1996, and was approved by the State Commission Office for Public Sector Reform not long ago as a separate institutional legal person which belongs to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
 
In accordance with the Articles of Association of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS, and the Measures for Election of Candidates of Academicians of the Chinese Science Center of IEAS, “the scientists and technical experts who have made creative and systematic achievements during their scientific research and technical innovation, and have made significant contributions to the scientific, economic and social development” can be nominated as candidates for academicians. The candidates can be awarded as academicians only after they successfully pass the competency review, initial review by the chairman board, and final election at the academician meeting. The Chinese Science Center of IEAS has held thirteen meetings of Chinese Academicians of IEAS, and elected 134 people as academicians of IEAS, among which, there are 124 academicians, 9 junior academicians and 1 honorary member. From this year on, the academician election will be held every two years from formerly every year.
