From July 24th to 31st, 2009, the “Risk Evaluation Technology for Natural Disasters in Yangtze River Triangle Region” research team conducts surveys on practical situations of disaster prevention and mitigation in Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai and Nongbo, and collects disaster statistics in these cities.
A commencement meeting is held in Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, in which Profession Shi Peijun introduces the background, main tasks and key purposes of the survey project. Director Yang Guishan later introduces general information of the Nanjing institute, especially their researches on flood disasters, flood risk evaluation, and land utilization. Leaders of several research teams respectively introduce their progresses, difficulties encountered, and future plans. The meeting further identifies and determines some key factors of the survey project, including precision and collection time of basic map data, social and economic statistics and RS data, types of disaster-inducing factors, evaluation indexes, evaluation units, and key points of evaluation.
After the meeting, members of the team successively visit Suzhou Water Conservancy Bureau, Suzhou Civil Affairs Bureau, Suzhou Meteorological Bureau, Bureau of Taihu Lake Basin, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, East China Normal University, Ningbo Insurance Regulatory Bureau and Ningbo Statistics Bureau among others. The team further collects basic data on social, economic and disaster information of the Yangtze River Triangle region by studying the research works done by these departments, thus to prepare well for creation of a database in conformity with the requirement of mapping precision, and compact solid foundation for risk evaluation for both single and multiple disasters, and disaster chain.
