On Sept. 4-6, 2013, Prof. Shi Peijun, Deputy Director of ADREM and Director of ESPRE, led a delegation of 8 professors and students to attend the 4th Conference of the International Society for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM 2013) held in Newcastle, UK.
With the theme of “From Opportunity to Action: Bridging the Gap between Disaster Reduction and Development through Science(s), Technology and People Centred Actions”, the conference discussed the latest achievement in science, policy and practice of disaster risk around the world, analyzed the challenges in the practice and policy of disaster reduction and risk management, and put forward new ideas of using science, technology and policy to tackle disaster reduction and development.
On Sept. 4th, IHDP-IRGP organized a side session with the theme of “Modeling and Case Studies of Integrated Risk Governance Paradigm for Very Large-scale Disasters”, which is chaired by Prof. Shi Peijun. Dr. Hirokazu Tatano from Kyoto University, Prof. Shi Peijun and Dr. Lv Yanli from BNU, Dr. Graham Coates from Durham University, and Dr. Gu Zhihui from Shenzhen University made presentations. All the presentations were highly appreciated by participants.
On Sept. 5th, Prof. Shi Peijun gave an invited speech titled “Complexity of Disaster System and Its Integrated Risk Analysis”. The theories of “Focus on Understanding Complexity of Large Scale Disasters” and “Concilience Model of IRG” raised in the presentation were accepted by the conference and included in the summary report of the conference.
On Sept. 5-6, 7 students made oral presentations and poster exhibitions separately. In the anonymous voting by all participant experts, Wu Xiaoning won the gold award of oral presentations titled “How Many Storms? Estimation of Historical Tropical Cyclone Rate for Coastal China” and poster exhibitions competition of young scientists/graduates. In addition, Wang Pin and Ming Xiaodong also ranked the 7th and 10th of the competition.
