Principle Academic Achievements

(1) In terms of the quaternary geology and previous global change, with loess and relevant quaternary sediment as the main object, academician An systematically studied the sediment and evolution of Chinese loess and its relationship with Palaeo-climate and Palaeo-environment, and associated it with global climate change;

(2) Introduced the quaternary magnetostraitigraphy in China, academician An pointed out the major geological climate events in China 2.4 million years ago, surveyed and evaluated the age of Lantian Man and Australian Desertification;

(3) In collaboration with Academician Liu Dongsheng, academician An successfully compared the Chinese loess with the sequence of abyssal deposit, rebuilt the climate history of loess plateau and wrote the Loess and Environment;

(4)Academician An proposed the evolution mode of loess deposit and its relationship with environmental evolution;

(5)Academician An put forward of the East Asian monsoon theory of controlling Chinese palaeo-environment changes, established the sequence of Chinese palaeo-environment changes over the last 2.4 million years, 130,000 years and 20,000 years, rebuilt the prospect of the environmental changes in China over the last 20,000 years and discussed systematically the changing mechanism of palaeo-monsoon;

(6) Academician An put forward the evidence and law for instability and emergency of winter monsoon climate in the last glacial age and interglacial age, and conducted comparative studies on the palaeo-climate of the southern hemisphere and northern hemisphere, which have been internationally accepted.

Publications

More than 180 articles academician An wrote have been published on such magazines as Nature, Science, Geology, Quaternary Research and Sciences of China. In 2005, in terms of theses citation, An Zhisheng ranked the first in China’s Geo-Science and the ninth in the world Geo-Science.
